Autonomy & The Artist | Self Portraiture
Age: 6th Grade

Visual Resources

Students learned about self portraiture. 6th graders discussed and analyzed work from Baroque painter Rembrandt, Surrealist artist Frida Kahlo, and contemporary artists Mickalene Thomas and Judith Geher. We analyzed their work and paid special attention to how they used symbolism, captured a mood, or told a story. Also in our discussions, we compared the idea of autonomy to how the artist determines the way the viewer looks and interprets their work. We discussed the use of a focal point to direct the audience’s attention.

As inspiration for their “autonomous” portraits, students considered how they identify and choose to present themselves. The self portraits are a product of several drafts, material exploration and technique, and thought provoking questioning of who they are!
